This past spring, Denver Parks and Rec launched an initiative to replace the grass lawns around City Hall with native plants and wildflowers, an eco-transformation affectionately known as “Coloradoscaping.” The project estimates that converting just one acre of Denver’s “front yard” will save approximately one million gallons of water per year. In response to Colorado’s historic drought and warmest winter since 1894, Denver Water recently implemented mandatory restrictions for metro residents, limiting lawn and garden watering to twice a week. In the increasingly urgent effort to conserve water, every acre counts—for people, plants, animals, and our future on this planet. Fortunately, turning your own backyard into a climate-resilient oasis that’s both water-efficient and scenic isn’t as daunting as it seems. Even small changes can compound over time to make a huge difference.

Cynthia Swanson’s 2024 novel “Anyone But Her," a mother-daughter narrative set partly in 1979 and partly in 2004, has already earned multiple honors, including the Colorado Book Award in the thriller category. It’s proof that some of the most interesting stories exist right in your own backyard, waiting for someone patient enough to look closely.

A Little Help, a Big Impact

Feature

Denver has long ranked among the top cities for sports fans, thanks to a fiercely devoted fan base led by the Broncos, the city’s unofficial religion. Amidst all the joy and anxiety and heartbreak, it can be tough to find time in the spectator schedule for that emergency session with your therapist when the Avalanche and Nuggets manage co-occurring playoff runs. You might, in that moment, do well to take in a feel-good dose of the consistent success of some of Denver’s under-the-radar sports superstars. Look no further than your Denver roller derby league.
